Updated: Jul 3

Before you start looking for a mentor, it's important to think about what kind of relationship you want. It may be tempting to bring in someone who is not currently in your industry, but it's worth considering if their expertise will directly help you with your goals. Be sure to list a few goals, opportunities, and challenges that you are facing so that you and your mentor can work on them together. Here's a bit of information you should ask your mentor:

How much time are you willing to commit?

You want to be realistic about how much time you are able to commit. When you find your mentor, it is important to set expectations. Find out if they are willing to dedicate an hour a week, or maybe more? Determine how you will use that time and discuss it with your mentor.

Where can I find more information or education about my industry?

If you're just starting out, chances are that you have a lot of questions. Where can I find more information or education about my industry? Where am I on the growth trajectory? What am I doing that's working and what am I doing that's not? What am I missing? Where are my weaknesses? Take advantage of your mentor for guidance!

What type of resources will I need to make my business successful?

The type of resources any entrepreneur will need is dependent on the type of business they're running. However, there are some basic things that any business will need such as a product, a service, an audience to reach, and money. If you don't have these things yet, you'll need to develop them. If you haven't already, start by writing a business plan to determine what you need for your business.

Where can I find help at different stages of my business?

Finding help when you are an entrepreneur can be tough and trusting someone to help you with your business is even more challenging. Have your business plan handy when speaking to your mentor so that they are aware of what your business is and how to best help you.

Where can I find networking groups in my industry?

Mentors can help you with a lot of different issues. They can answer questions about your business, give advice on how to improve and provide feedback that will allow you to grow professionally. Be sure to ask your mentor about networking. Networking will help you find others in your industry as well as potential clients.
